January
Ianua opens to a brand new year, new beginnings are ever near
The air is colder, the days dark and grim, we don’t go out as we prefer to stay in
We don’t look forward to our return to work, but we soldier on, we cannot shirk
Bills arrive from our plastic splash, the month seems long as we count our cash
Sniffs and coughs pollute the air, pharmacies are busy as we reach for care
Snowfall disrupts the flow of traffic, the shelves are bare brought on by panic
Children revel on the snowy slopes, they don’t care, they’re full of hope
We need this hope for so many, it’s the start of a year, it’s January

March
The Romans’ named it Martius it was the first month of their year It’s third week is the Equinox proclaiming ‘Spring is here!’ On the first day in The Valley’s there is guy called Taff He celebrates this Saints day with a lovely yellow daff’ In the Emerald Isle they dance a jig to celebrate Saint Pat' The fiddles hum as the Guiness flows, the pub is where it's at As the final days of winter slowly melt away We end the month in happiness as we celebrate Mother’s Day |
April
Day one is the day to be a fool, play a prank, break a rule Of course be wary of what you do as the joke may soon come back at you April’s birthstone is diamond bright, creating showery sparkles against the light We hear the cuckoo’s distinctive voice, where to lay her eggs she makes a choice The Daisies bloom as Spring takes hold, the gentle breeze no longer cold The month ends in celebration of Jesus Christ, they say he helps us ‘see the light’ |
May
Around the Pole Morris Men dance, the May Queens’ beauty has you in a trance Children revel and play the fool, the Bank Holiday means they’re out of school As the cows are milked three times a day, Springtime slowly fades away Those in love plan to tie the knot, there’s an old wives tale that shouldn’t be forgot Because this is what the old wives say; "marry in May and you'll rue the day" The month ends with a waning moon, signalling the transition into June |
June
We believe that with the start of June, each day we’ll see the sun shining through Days are long and the nights are warm, we welcome summer from dusk to dawn The Solstice marks the longest day, people come from afar to sing and pray Hear the Pagans and the Druids drone as they watch the sunrise above the stones We know of course there could be rain, our English weather drives us insane But festivals need some mud, we’ve got our wellies, all will be good. |
July
Named in honour of the Roman, who by the hand of his friend he fell
This month is full of history, as past events do tell Across the pond they celebrate Independence on the fourth I think we’re o.k not being there, that’s my opinion for what it’s worth On the lawns of South West 19 competitors dressed in white Swing their racquets with power and grace, for the salver they do fight The eager crowds pour through the gates filling out the courts Some folks are dressed up to impress whilst the players are in their shorts In Sixty Six at Wembley we stood with our heads bowed Then the Lions roared, we won the cup and made our nation proud |
August
School is out and so’s the sun,
August’s here it’s time for fun A holiday abroad or a welcome staycation, A chance to ditch the dreaded PlayStation Grandparents on standby to provide the cover as Families juggle work to help out each other. Getting out and about is a must, To enjoy the thirty one days that are August. |
September
Originally the seventh month, it then became number nine
It began with only 29 days then added one over time September draws us into autumn as the kids go back to school Sunny days are still around but the temperature begins to cool September is very special to me and much so to my wife As on a rainy night in ’72 twin sons came into our life. |
October
As autumn colours burst into life and leaves fall from the trees
The chills of winter are not far away in the coolness of the breeze The joys of summer gently fade away drawing in the darker nights The heating thermostat kicks in at three and we turn on the lights At least we can plan to have some fun on the last day it would seem For all those who love ghouls and ghosts, we can celebrate Halloween. |
November
Remember remember how suddenly cold it gets in November
As autumn slowly loses its grip, in the air we feel a frosty nip The kids wrap up for bonfire night, the fireworks give your pets a fright Men stop shaving to promote their cause, the money raised deserves applause Darkness comes early as the nights draw in, even the mornings are looking grim Seasonal SADness affects some folks, we need to cheer them with our jokes Remember remember that although it's November, it won’t be long before it's December. |
December
A month that’s full of contrasts as we navigate through its days
With cold and frosty mornings filled with foggy haze We hear children chattering excitedly hoping their dreams will come true We count the pennies and the cost and try to avoid the flu In stores across the nation the tills are ringing loud We queue patiently at the check-out and fight our way through the crowds The roads are full the car parks too So to shop online is what we do But apart from all the stress this manic month will bring We find the time to walk the streets and let our voices sing We marvel at the twinkling lights adorning peoples homes It’s a festive marvel that lifts our hearts, we have no need to moan The year is drawing to an end, oh how time has flown We read in the news of people’s lives of those who’ll be alone We’re thankful for our family and friends for our time here on earth For me it’s not just the last month of the year, but the month of my birth |
