There’s something about sport that captured my mind, if only my body had been able to find
The strength and energy to do much more, but I guess my physique was my one major flaw I’m really competitive, always trying to win, and though losing looks likely I’ll never give in Whilst endurance and skill can be your greatest test, being gracious in defeat means you’ve given your best. We’d play football for hours over the park, teams of fifteen aside playing right through ‘till dark ‘Next goal's the winner’ would be the plea, from the side that was losing knowing it was soon time for tea Trudging home clothes muddy and torn, don’t do that again my mother would warn Don’t play in your school clothes was the golden rule, as you’ll have nothing to wear when you go to school Some sports I tried but just didn’t make it, rugby of course I was too small to hack it Cricket I’m afraid didn’t inspire me at all, I was poor with bat and worse with the ball In track and field I was pretty pathetic, I guess I was never gonna be athletic. In motorsport I’d have been a good driver, but you can’t get it going when you’ve only a fiver But I had my moments on the pitch and the court, scored a few headed goals even though I was short My racquet was hot for several years, I loved the game and had no fears Hitting a forehand down the line, or chipping a drop-shot were favourites of mine With old limbs and muscles now limiting my scope, it’s with the putter and nine iron I find I can cope So to all of you out there who’ve enjoyed sport as well, you’ve no doubt got you own tales to tell Whether converting the try or hitting that four, a little success will make you want more Sport can bring people together from all walks of life, played by boys, and girls or a husband and wife Encourage the young, get them off their computer, out in the fresh air to be our sporting future |
